For the fourth year now my country has been engulfed in flames. For nearly a millennium the Ukrainian people have suffered humiliation and violence associated with the expansion of Muscovy. The invader’s bloody hands have sought to seize names, erase history, appropriate property and claim lives. Although resistance to this relentless onslaught has been constant, the aspiration for freedom and dignity long failed to culminate in a definitive victory: independence was won only at the cost of generations’ blood.
We now endure a fresh and painful trial: decades of intimidation and systematic subjugation have left deep scars in the collective memory. Russian propaganda has for years propagated narratives of a “single people” and an alleged right to possess Ukraine — narratives that have found echo amid the weaknesses of certain Western institutions. Within the country the influence of ignorance and hostility toward humane values remains perceptible, creating additional internal vulnerabilities.
Yet today we stand at a decisive juncture. A struggle is unfolding between the values of progress and humaneness over the preservation of our dignity and sovereignty. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are defending not only territory but also a historical project: the right to construct a society founded on respect, reciprocity and responsibility in relations among individuals and between states.
The Union of Humanity, as an initiative, is gaining momentum — serving as a forum for those who regard humaneness not as a mere term but as a coherent system of values and the principal path to peace and social justice. The Union unites those who oppose the global spread of ignorance, nourished by imperial ambitions and distorted ideologies. We must act by all available means: educational initiatives, civic engagement, international solidarity and concrete assistance to those harmed by violence.
Ukraine constitutes a frontier between two worlds: one capable of love, care and accountability, aspiring to civilized and equal relations; the other marked by malice and hatred, moral weakness and vice, an absence of responsibility and entrenched servitude. The road to freedom and dignity is obstructed by many obstacles, but it is within our power to choose the side of humaneness.
We call upon everyone to reject indifference — toward themselves and toward others. Remain vigilant in the face of any manifestation of cruelty; join with like-minded persons; support educational and volunteer initiatives; and defend the rights and dignity of people both locally and on the international stage. Our struggle must address not only external aggression but also the ignorance within: education, open dialogue and empathy are our foremost instruments.
Time is the most precious resource in our lives; it is granted to us for thoughtful existence, for love and for progress. To ensure that this time is not squandered, cultivate self-respect and embrace responsibility for the world you inhabit. When we experience ourselves as one with nature and with one another, the genuine harmony of a life without violence and sorrow becomes visible.
